Fungus Control in Southern, CA
From the cordyceps “zombie” fungus that takes over ants’ bodies to mold that turns your old bread green, fungi are living organisms that belong to their own kingdom due to their unique lifeforms. Not quite plants or animals, fungi can appear alien-like with tiny spores, unique colors, or general lack of an identifiable structure. (Hey, at least they don’t move quickly!)
With 144,000 species of known fungi worldwide, you’d expect at least a few of them to be fun guys (here’s to you, Portobello mushrooms). But when it comes to fungi growing on the wooden structures of your home, there is little “fun” about it.
When moisture is introduced to any wood members in or around your home, a fungus can take hold and thrive by making your infrastructure a meal. With ample oxygen, moisture, food sources, and warmth, a fungus can propagate and cause a great deal of damage, not to mention that it can contribute to the degradation of support beams that keep your home intact.
At Lloyd, our expertise doesn’t simply stop at kicking pests to curb. If you’re dealing with wood rot due to fungus, our team can help.
Types of Fungal Wood Rot We Treat
The two main types of fungal wood rot we treat are pocket rot (white rot) and brown rot.
Pocket Rot
When wood has been exposed to moisture for long periods of time, pocket rot (white rot) can develop and destroy the integrity of wood members. Featuring a white sheen, pocket rot causes wood to turn soft and fibrous, making it easy to tear and disintegrate.
Brown Rot
Similar to pocket rot, brown rot can settle into wood members that have been exposed to moisture for long periods of time. Brown rot causes wood to shrink, which makes it chunk up into segments that look geometrical or cube-like.

The Importance of Fungus-Free Wood Members
While wood fungus can cause significant damage to the structure of your home, it can also create an easily navigable pathway for termites. Because fungus softens wood, it allows drywood and subterranean termites to burrow much more easily. Additionally, when these termites burrow into wood, they bring in their own moisture, which perpetuates the damaging cycle of wood rot.
How Lloyd Repairs Fungus-Stricken Wood
During a home inspection, we seek out specific areas where we know moisture is likely to exist or settle. Commonly, high-risk wood members are in areas where water sits and dries after it rains. Using a probe, our team will search for softwood—a common symptom of wood fungus—in these areas and notify you of any discovery.
Once all moisture-prone areas have been scoped and softwood has been identified, we will tear out any damaged piece of lumber and repair it with a brand new piece.
